What it means
Fuel Fill Door Unlock Control Range or Performance: the component is electrically intact but its response does not match the command.
How it works
The unlock actuator moves the fuel-fill door latch when the control module requests release. P04C0 sets when the electrical circuit appears intact but the door's response is too slow, incomplete, or otherwise inconsistent with the unlock command.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Worn or sluggish unlock actuator
- Binding or obstructed lock linkage
- Loose or damaged actuator connection
Symptoms
- Fuel-fill door may unlock slowly or inconsistently
- Fuel-fill door may not release when requested
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and scan-tool unlock commands alongside door status to establish whether release is delayed or absent.
- Inspect the fuel-fill door and latch area for dirt, ice, misalignment, or anything physically obstructing movement.
- Watch the latch and linkage during an unlock command to identify binding or incomplete actuator travel.
- Inspect the actuator connector and wiring for looseness or damage that could weaken or interrupt the command.
- Test actuator operation and position feedback, where available, against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clear debris or ice and correct a misaligned door or latch.
- Secure a loose actuator connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Repair or replace a binding lock linkage.
- Replace a worn or sluggish unlock actuator if testing confirms poor response.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is generally safe if the fuel-fill door is shut and secure, but it may fail to release at the fuel station. Avoid forcing it open because the latch or door can break.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
