What it means
Same as P04BB with the control line shorted to ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
How it works
The fuel-fill door lock actuator is controlled through an electrical circuit, and the control module monitors the circuit while commanding the lock. P04BD sets when the control line is held below its expected range, commonly because it is shorted to ground. This low-circuit fault is different from an open circuit or a signal that is too high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Fuel-fill door may not lock
- Fuel-fill door warning or status may be incorrect
How to diagnose it
- Check fuel-door lock status and live circuit data to confirm the control line reads low when the module commands the lock.
- Inspect the actuator connector and harness for chafing, moisture, corrosion, or exposed wire touching ground.
- With live data displayed, gently move the harness and connector to see whether the low reading changes.
- Measure the control line for a short to ground, following the manufacturer's specification and circuit isolation procedure.
- If the wiring has no short, test the actuator and module output according to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair control wiring that is chafed or shorted to ground.
- Clean corroded terminals and repair loose or damaged connector pins.
- Replace a failed actuator if the control circuit is sound but the actuator causes the low reading.
- Repair a confirmed module output fault only after the wiring and actuator test correctly.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is generally safe, but the fuel-fill door may not lock and its status may be wrong. Check that the door stays closed before driving and arrange repair if it can open or cannot be secured.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
