What it means
The control module monitors vapor flow from the EVAP system to the engine when purge is commanded. It sets this code when the measured purge flow is below the expected amount.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP purge system draws stored fuel vapour from the charcoal canister through a purge valve and line into the engine. The control module checks whether vapour flow responds when purge is commanded; P0497 sets when the measured flow is lower than expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Purge valve sticking partially closed
- Purge line restricted by debris or kinks
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
- Failed emissions inspection
- Loose-cap warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare commanded purge with tank-pressure or flow readings to confirm when the low-flow fault occurred.
- Inspect the purge line from the canister to the engine for kinks, debris, collapsed sections, or disconnections that could restrict flow.
- Check the purge valve connector and hoses, then verify that the valve moves and passes vapour when commanded according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the purge valve for restricted movement or a partially closed condition against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the valve and line pass inspection, check the canister and remaining EVAP passages for a blockage.
Common fixes
- Straighten or replace a kinked or damaged purge line.
- Clear a confirmed obstruction in the purge path.
- Replace a purge valve that sticks partially closed.
- Replace a damaged canister if testing confirms it is restricting flow.
Can I keep driving?
The car is generally drivable, though the check-engine light may remain on and emissions testing can fail. A persistent fuel smell should be investigated promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
