What it means
The control module monitors the electrical voltage in the EVAP vent valve control circuit. It sets this code when that voltage is below the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP vent valve controls airflow into and out of the charcoal canister during leak checks and other system operations. The control module monitors the vent valve control circuit; P0498 sets when its electrical signal is below the expected range, which can indicate a short to ground or a failed valve circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Vent valve control circuit shorted to ground
- Vent valve solenoid fault
- Connector or wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
- Failed emissions inspection
- Loose-cap warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for related EVAP electrical codes to identify whether the fault appeared during a vent-valve command.
- Locate the EVAP vent valve and inspect its connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, moisture, or a wire touching ground.
- Check the vent valve fuse and power and ground feeds using the vehicle wiring diagram.
- Measure the control-circuit signal while commanding the vent valve, and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If wiring checks pass, test the vent-valve solenoid and its control circuit separately to identify whether the valve or harness is pulling the signal low.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a corroded or loose vent-valve connector.
- Repair wiring shorted to ground or damaged near the vent valve.
- Replace a vent-valve solenoid that fails its electrical test.
- Repair a confirmed fuse, power-feed, or ground fault.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is usually possible, but the EVAP system may not complete its leak checks and the car can fail emissions inspection. If fuel vapour is noticeable, avoid sparks or smoking near the vehicle and arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
