What it means
The control module monitors the speed of cooling fan 1 and sets this code when the fan runs faster than the expected range. This can happen when fan speed feedback or fan control does not match the commanded operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Cooling Fan 1 pulls air through the radiator to control engine temperature, and the control module monitors its speed against the commanded operation. P0495 sets when Fan 1’s reported speed is above the expected range. A relay stuck closed, a control signal shorted to power, or faulty speed feedback can keep the fan running too fast.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fan 1 relay welded closed
- PWM line shorted to supply
Symptoms
- Cooling fan may run faster or louder than usual
- Cooling fan may continue running after the engine is switched off
- Engine may run cooler than usual
- Air conditioning may behave inconsistently
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live readings to compare Fan 1’s commanded speed with its reported speed when the code sets.
- Inspect Fan 1’s connector and wiring, including its control signal, for damaged insulation, shorts to power, loose terminals, or heat damage.
- With the engine off and cool, inspect the fan and shroud for damage or obstruction; keep hands clear because the fan may start unexpectedly.
- Check whether Fan 1 continues to receive power when it should be off, and test its relay or control module and speed feedback against the manufacturer’s specification.
- Repair the confirmed relay, wiring, control, or feedback fault, then verify Fan 1 follows its commanded speed and shuts off as expected.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed Fan 1 control wiring that is shorted to a supply voltage.
- Replace a Fan 1 relay that tests as stuck or welded closed.
- Repair loose, corroded, or damaged connector terminals in the Fan 1 speed-feedback or control circuit.
- Replace a faulty fan control module if testing shows it is driving Fan 1 too fast.
- Replace the Fan 1 speed sensor or fan assembly if speed feedback is inaccurate after the control fault is ruled out.
Can I keep driving?
A fan running too fast or continuing after shutdown is usually less urgent than inadequate cooling, but it can drain the battery and may affect air-conditioning operation. Monitor engine temperature and arrange repair soon; stop if the engine overheats.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
