OBD-II fault code

P0430: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

What it means

Same condition as P0420 but on bank 2. On engines with one shared catalyst per bank, P0420 and P0430 appearing together usually point to age rather than damage.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module compares oxygen-sensor activity before and after the Bank 2 catalyst to judge how well that catalyst stores oxygen and cleans the exhaust. P0430 sets when the monitored efficiency falls below the allowed threshold; sensor drift or an exhaust leak can affect the comparison as well as a worn catalyst.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Catalyst aged or contaminated
  2. Downstream oxygen sensor drift

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Possibly slightly increased fuel consumption
  • Sulfur (rotten egg) smell from exhaust under load

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and fuel-trim and oxygen-sensor live data to see when the Bank 2 efficiency monitor failed and whether the signals look plausible.
  2. Check for exhaust leaks around the Bank 2 catalyst and sensor joints, since outside air can distort the readings.
  3. Inspect Bank 2 upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor wiring and connectors for heat damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  4. Compare the upstream and downstream Bank 2 sensor behavior under the manufacturer's test conditions to identify a drifting sensor.
  5. If leaks and sensor faults are ruled out, assess the Bank 2 catalyst for aging or contamination and check for engine problems that could damage it.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak at the Bank 2 catalyst or sensor joints.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection at a Bank 2 oxygen sensor.
  • Replace a confirmed drifting Bank 2 oxygen sensor.
  • Replace the Bank 2 catalyst if testing confirms it has lost efficiency.

Can I keep driving?

Usually the vehicle can be driven gently if it runs normally, but the emissions system may fail inspection and fuel use may rise slightly. Avoid heavy load if exhaust smells strongly of sulfur, and address the fault promptly because a damaged catalyst or underlying engine problem can worsen.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
