OBD-II fault code

P0432: Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

What it means

The engine control module has detected that the Bank 2 main catalyst system is below its monitored efficiency threshold. The code does not by itself identify the failed component.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 main catalyst treats exhaust after the engine has warmed up. The engine control module uses sensor data to assess its efficiency, and P0432 sets when the monitored main-catalyst performance falls below its threshold; the code alone does not prove the catalyst itself has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Catalyst aged or contaminated
  2. Oxygen sensor drift

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Possibly slightly increased fuel consumption
  • Sulfur (rotten egg) smell from exhaust under load

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live data to establish when the Bank 2 main-catalyst monitor failed and whether sensor readings are plausible.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 exhaust manifold, main catalyst, and sensor joints for leaks that could affect the monitor.
  3. Check Bank 2 oxygen-sensor connectors and wiring for corrosion, heat damage, or loose terminals.
  4. Compare Bank 2 sensor activity under the manufacturer's test conditions to identify a sensor that is drifting or responding poorly.
  5. If leaks and sensor faults are ruled out, assess the Bank 2 main catalyst and investigate engine conditions that may have contaminated it.

Common fixes

  • Repair leaks in the Bank 2 exhaust near the main catalyst or sensors.
  • Repair poor wiring or connector contact at a Bank 2 oxygen sensor.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty Bank 2 oxygen sensor.
  • Replace the Bank 2 main catalyst if tests confirm insufficient efficiency.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is usually driveable if it runs normally, but it may fail an emissions inspection and fuel consumption can increase slightly. Avoid hard acceleration if the exhaust smells strongly of sulfur, and have the cause addressed before catalyst damage progresses.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
