What it means
Electrical fault in the glow plug indicator lamp or relay circuit. The ECU monitors driver feedback to ensure the dashboard indicator can be commanded; an open or shorted circuit triggers this code.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The glow plug indicator circuit controls the dashboard lamp that tells the driver when glow plug preheating is underway. The control module monitors the indicator circuit’s electrical response and sets P0381 when the lamp circuit does not respond as expected; this code concerns the indicator, not necessarily glow plug heater power.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Indicator bulb or LED failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
- Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
- White smoke from exhaust during warm-up
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check whether the module commanded the glow plug indicator when the fault set.
- Observe the dashboard lamp during the normal key-on and cold-start sequence and compare it with scan-tool command data.
- Inspect the indicator lamp or LED circuit, wiring, and connectors for an open, short, loose connection, or corrosion.
- Test circuit continuity and the lamp load according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the indicator circuit passes, test the module's indicator output and feedback against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Replace a failed indicator bulb or repair the dashboard LED circuit if serviceable.
- Repair an open or short in the indicator wiring.
- Clean and secure corroded or loose connector terminals.
- Repair or replace the failed indicator driver or control module if testing confirms it.
Can I keep driving?
The engine may still start and run, but the dashboard lamp may not reliably show when preheating is active, making cold starts harder to judge. Allow the vehicle’s normal preheat cycle before cranking and avoid repeated long attempts in cold weather.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
