What it means
The glow plug control module reports an electrical fault on circuit A — typically a single glow plug open-circuit, the relay failing, or wiring to the harness damaged. Diesel-specific; affects cold-start behaviour.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Glow plug heater circuit A supplies power to the engine’s glow plugs during cold starting. The control module monitors circuit A for electrical faults and sets P0380 when the circuit response is abnormal; the code alone does not identify a particular plug or fault type.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- One or more glow plugs open-circuit
- Glow plug relay failed
- Wiring/harness damage
Symptoms
- Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
- Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
- White smoke from exhaust during warm-up
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check glow plug command and circuit A status during a cold-start event.
- Inspect circuit A wiring, connectors, relay, and glow plug connections for damage, looseness, or corrosion.
- Check each glow plug served by circuit A for an open or other electrical fault using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test circuit A power delivery and relay operation while the module commands the glow plugs.
- If the plugs, wiring, and relay pass, test the glow plug control module and its circuit inputs against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure loose or corroded glow plug connections.
- Repair damaged circuit A wiring or harness connectors.
- Replace failed glow plug or plugs identified by testing.
- Replace a faulty glow plug relay or control module if circuit checks confirm it.
Can I keep driving?
A circuit A failure can make a diesel engine hard to start in cold weather and cause white smoke during warm-up. Avoid repeated extended cranking; if the engine starts and runs normally when warm, drive gently until the circuit is repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
