OBD-II fault code

P037A: Glow Plug/Heater Indicator Control Circuit Low

What it means

The driver circuit for the glow plug warning indicator (the dashboard glow lamp) is stuck low — short to ground or stuck-low driver.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The glow plug indicator circuit carries the control module’s command to the dashboard glow lamp. The module monitors the circuit’s electrical response and sets P037A when the indicator control line is held below its expected level, often by a short to ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
  • Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
  • White smoke from exhaust during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check whether the glow plug indicator command is active when the code sets.
  2. Check whether the dashboard glow lamp responds normally during a cold start and compare the commanded state with scan-tool data.
  3. Inspect the indicator circuit wiring and connectors for chafing, damaged insulation, corrosion, or loose pins.
  4. With the circuit safely isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check for an unintended path to ground.
  5. If the wiring and connections are sound, test the indicator driver and control module against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed wiring that is shorting the indicator line to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded, loose, or damaged connector terminals.
  • Repair or replace a damaged section of the indicator harness.
  • Replace the failed indicator driver or control module if circuit tests confirm it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

The indicator circuit fault may hide whether the glow plugs are being commanded, so cold starting can become difficult and unburned fuel may cause white smoke during warm-up. Avoid repeated extended cranking, especially in cold weather.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
