OBD-II fault code

P0333: Knock Sensor 2 Circuit High Input (Bank 2)

What it means

The bank 2 knock sensor signal is above the expected voltage range. Typically caused by a short to supply voltage or an internal sensor fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Knock sensor 2 on bank 2 senses engine vibration and reports it to the controller so ignition timing can be adjusted if knock is detected. P0333 sets when the circuit signal is higher than the controller expects, commonly because the signal wire is shorted to a supply or the sensor has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to supply
  2. Knock sensor failed
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss from defensive spark retard
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible audible pinging under load

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data, live knock-sensor readings, and related codes to confirm the bank 2 signal is high when the fault is detected.
  2. Inspect sensor 2's bank 2 connector and wiring for corrosion, damaged insulation, loose pins, or contact with a powered wire.
  3. Follow the wiring diagram and manufacturer's test procedure to check whether the signal circuit is shorted to a supply voltage.
  4. Test the sensor and connector terminals against the manufacturer's specification to separate a sensor fault from a circuit fault.
  5. Repair the confirmed short, connector problem, or failed sensor, then recheck the signal during operation.

Common fixes

  • Repair a bank 2 knock-sensor signal wire shorted to a supply.
  • Restore damaged insulation or repair loose or corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace knock sensor 2 on bank 2 if it fails the specified test.
  • Clear the code and verify that the high signal does not recur.

Can I keep driving?

Keep acceleration light and avoid heavy-load driving while the controller may be unable to interpret bank 2 knock correctly. If you hear persistent pinging or notice a major loss of power, stop driving and get the fault assessed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
