OBD-II fault code

P0330: Knock Sensor 2 Circuit (Bank 2)

What it means

A general electrical fault in the bank 2 knock sensor circuit. The ECU monitors a piezoelectric sensor for engine vibration patterns associated with detonation; an open, shorted, or out-of-range circuit triggers this code.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Knock sensor 2 on bank 2 detects vibration in that bank and sends a signal to the engine controller so it can distinguish normal combustion from knock. P0330 sets when the bank 2 sensor circuit has an electrical fault, such as an open, short, or signal outside the expected range; the controller may retard spark as a precaution.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Knock sensor failed
  2. Wiring/connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss from defensive spark retard
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible audible pinging under load

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and scan for related knock-sensor or engine-control codes to establish when the bank 2 circuit fault occurred.
  2. Locate knock sensor 2 and inspect its connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with hot or moving parts.
  3. With the ignition off and using the wiring diagram, check the bank 2 sensor circuit for opens or shorts and compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test the sensor according to the manufacturer's procedure and compare its circuit readings with the specified range.
  5. Repair the wiring or connector fault found, or replace the sensor if the circuit checks pass but the sensor fails its test.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose bank 2 knock-sensor connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector terminals and ensure a sound connection.
  • Replace knock sensor 2 on bank 2 if it fails the specified test.
  • Clear the code and confirm the circuit remains fault-free after operation.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle trip may be possible, but avoid heavy throttle and steep hills because knock detection on bank 2 may be unreliable and spark may be retarded. Stop if you hear persistent pinging or the engine loses substantial power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
