What it means
Knock sensor B signal jumps or drops out intermittently — usually a corroded connector or chafed wire near the cylinder head.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Knock sensor B detects engine vibration and sends a changing signal to the controller to help it identify combustion knock. P0334 sets when that signal drops out or jumps intermittently, often because movement, heat, or corrosion disrupts the sensor's connector or wiring.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent connector
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or acceleration
- Engine knocking may be more noticeable
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live sensor readings for dropouts, and note whether they coincide with engine vibration, heat, or a particular load.
- Locate sensor B and inspect its connector and nearby harness for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or heat damage.
- With the vehicle safely stationary, check for an intermittent connection using the manufacturer's procedure while monitoring the sensor circuit for dropouts.
- Test sensor B and its wiring for continuity and signal stability against the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair the intermittent connection or wiring fault found, or replace sensor B if its signal remains unstable with a sound circuit.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor B connector and route the harness away from chafing or heat.
- Repair corroded terminals or damaged wiring in the sensor B circuit.
- Replace sensor B if it fails the specified signal-stability test.
- Clear the code and confirm the signal stays steady under the conditions that previously triggered it.
Can I keep driving?
Drive gently and avoid heavy acceleration while the controller may not reliably detect knock. Stop if engine knocking becomes pronounced or power falls significantly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
