What it means
The engine torque measured (or modelled from intake/exhaust signals) is below the calibrated set point for the commanded throttle position. Causes range from low compression, intake leak, fuel pressure issue, ignition fault, to high mechanical drag.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine controller estimates or measures how much torque the engine is producing and compares it with the torque expected for the commanded throttle. P032F sets when that torque is below the calibrated threshold, which can happen if cylinders have low compression, the engine is short of fuel, or unmetered air enters through an intake leak.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Low compression on one or more cylinders
- Fuel pressure low
- Intake leak
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Sluggish acceleration
- Difficulty climbing hills
- Possible stalling under load
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live throttle, engine-load, fuel-trim, and misfire readings to see when torque fell short and whether the problem points to air, fuel, or combustion.
- Inspect intake hoses, ducts, and connections for splits or leaks that could let air bypass the airflow measurement.
- Check for related fuel-pressure, mixture, or misfire codes, then assess fuel delivery against the manufacturer's specification.
- If air and fuel checks do not explain the low output, compare cylinder compression using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Check for excessive mechanical drag or other engine faults if compression and fuel delivery appear normal.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or replace a split or loose intake hose or seal.
- Repair a fuel-delivery fault identified by pressure or mixture checks.
- Repair the ignition fault or misfiring cylinder identified during diagnosis.
- Repair an engine mechanical fault if compression testing finds a weak cylinder.
Can I keep driving?
You may be able to drive gently to a safe place, but avoid hard acceleration, steep climbs, and towing because the engine may stall or lose power under load. If it stalls, runs very rough, or cannot maintain speed safely, stop driving and arrange assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
