What it means
Diesel intake air-flow control A is electrically OK but does not move the throttle plate as commanded — typically carbon buildup or seized actuator.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The diesel intake air flow control valve adjusts airflow into the engine, and its actuator moves the valve in response to commands from the control module. This code sets when the circuit is electrically functional but the valve’s movement or response does not match what the module expects.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intake flow control valve or actuator sticking
- Carbon or debris restricting valve movement
- Linkage or valve mechanism worn or damaged
- Position sensor or actuator fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and reported intake valve position, if available, to see when the response fell outside the expected range.
- Inspect the valve body, actuator linkage, and accessible intake passages for carbon or debris that could restrict movement.
- With the engine off, check whether the linkage or valve mechanism is visibly damaged, loose, or binding; do not force it.
- Use the manufacturer’s scan-tool procedure to command the actuator and observe whether the valve moves smoothly and position feedback follows.
- If the valve moves freely but feedback or movement remains incorrect, test the actuator and position sensor using the manufacturer’s procedure.
Common fixes
- Remove carbon or debris from the intake flow control valve using the vehicle’s approved cleaning procedure.
- Repair or replace a damaged or worn linkage or valve mechanism.
- Replace a sticking actuator if testing confirms it does not respond correctly.
- Repair or replace a faulty position sensor if its feedback does not match actual valve movement.
Can I keep driving?
If power loss is mild and the engine remains stable, drive gently and arrange diagnosis soon. Avoid towing or hard acceleration, and stop if the engine stalls or becomes too sluggish to keep up safely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
