OBD-II fault code

P02E7: Diesel Intake Air Flow Control Circuit Intermittent

What it means

The control module detected an intermittent fault in the diesel intake air flow control circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The diesel intake air flow control system uses a position sensor to report how far its intake flap has moved. P02E7 sets when the circuit signal is intermittent, so the reported position may drop out or vary unexpectedly; a drifting or aged sensor, or a loose sensor mounting that allows a damped signal, can cause this pattern.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor drift
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Reduced engine power or slower acceleration
  • Rough or uneven engine response
  • Poorer fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live position data for dropouts or sudden changes, and note whether they occur with engine vibration or changing load.
  2. Inspect the intake flow control sensor mounting and connector for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or pin damage that could interrupt the signal.
  3. With live data displayed, gently move the sensor harness and connector to see whether the reported position flickers.
  4. Check the sensor signal, supply, and ground circuits for intermittent connection or unstable readings using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the wiring and mounting are sound, test the sensor across its operating range and compare its output with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose position sensor and its connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Repair an intermittent section of sensor wiring.
  • Replace a sensor that drifts or falls outside the manufacturer's calibration specification.

Can I keep driving?

If power and response remain predictable, drive gently and arrange diagnosis soon. If the engine begins to stall, lose power, or respond unevenly in traffic, stop somewhere safe because the intermittent flap signal may make engine response unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
