OBD-II fault code

P02B1: Cylinder 6 - Injector Leaking

What it means

The control module detects that fuel flow from the cylinder 6 injector continues when it should be closed. It sets this code when the detected leakage exceeds its calibrated limit; the code alone does not identify whether the nozzle, seal, or another part is responsible.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine computer monitors whether cylinder 6's injector stops flowing fuel when commanded closed. This code sets when fuel continues entering cylinder 6 beyond the calibrated leakage limit, but it does not say whether the nozzle, internal valve, seal, or control is at fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector nozzle or internal valve leaking
  2. Injector seat or seal leaking
  3. Injector stuck open or control fault
  4. Excess fuel pressure

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough idle or engine vibration
  • Misfire or hesitation
  • Fuel odor or increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and cylinder 6 misfire information, and note any fuel odor or difficult starting.
  2. With the engine off, inspect cylinder 6 injector area and seal for visible leakage; do not run the engine if fuel is leaking externally.
  3. Check cylinder 6 injector wiring and control signals for a fault that could keep the injector energized.
  4. Perform an injector leakage or balance test and compare cylinder 6 with the other cylinders.
  5. Verify fuel pressure and injector sealing against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Replace a leaking cylinder 6 injector seal.
  • Repair a cylinder 6 injector wiring or control fault that keeps it open.
  • Replace a cylinder 6 injector that leaks internally or through its nozzle.
  • Correct excessive fuel pressure if testing confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if there is a strong fuel smell or visible external leak; shut off the engine and address the leak. If there is no external leak, keep trips short because excess fuel can cause misfires, dilute engine oil, and damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
