OBD-II fault code

P02A1: Cylinder 2 - Injector Leaking

What it means

The control module detected fuel leakage from the cylinder 2 injector. The code identifies leakage but does not establish whether the nozzle, seal, or another part is responsible.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Cylinder 2’s injector delivers fuel when commanded by the engine control module. P02A1 sets when the module detects fuel leakage associated with this injector, which may come from its nozzle, internal valve, or seal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector nozzle or internal valve leaking
  2. Injector seal or seat leaking
  3. Injector stuck open or control fault
  4. Excess fuel pressure

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough idle or engine vibration
  • Misfire or hesitation
  • Fuel odor or increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check cylinder 2 misfire and fuel-trim readings to understand when the leakage symptom occurs.
  2. With the engine off, inspect cylinder 2’s injector and surrounding area for wet fuel, residue, or a damaged seal; treat any visible leak as a fire risk.
  3. Check cylinder 2’s injector connector and wiring for damage or a fault that could hold the injector open.
  4. Use the maker’s approved procedure to assess whether cylinder 2’s injector leaks when it should be closed.
  5. Check fuel pressure against the manufacturer’s specification and inspect the injector seat or seal if leakage remains.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or a connector fault that keeps cylinder 2’s injector energized.
  • Replace a leaking cylinder 2 injector seal or correct its seating, following the maker’s procedure.
  • Replace cylinder 2’s injector if its nozzle or internal valve leaks.
  • Correct fuel pressure if it exceeds the manufacturer’s specification.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive with visible fuel leaking around cylinder 2’s injector because fuel can ignite; have the leak repaired before restarting. If there is no external leak but the engine runs rough or smells of fuel, avoid extended driving because excess fuel can damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
