OBD-II fault code

P0254: Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control A High (Cam/Rotor/Injector)

What it means

Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control A High (Cam/Rotor/Injector): the control module has detected this fault condition. This affects fueling of the associated cylinders.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Injection-pump fuel metering control A regulates fuel delivery, and the control module monitors its electrical signal and operation. P0254 sets when the control A signal is above the expected range. A high signal can make the pump misread or misapply the requested fueling.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Damaged wiring or connector
  2. Fuel metering actuator or valve failure
  3. Poor electrical connection
  4. Control module fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Rough running
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live control A and fuel-pressure readings to establish when the high signal appears.
  2. Inspect control A's connector and harness for a short to power, crossed or damaged wires, corrosion, or poor terminal fit.
  3. Check fuel supply condition and look for restrictions or contamination that may coincide with abnormal metering behavior.
  4. Measure the control A circuit and compare signal behavior with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test the metering actuator and module driver separately before condemning the injection pump or control module.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control A wire shorted to power or otherwise damaged.
  • Clean and secure the connector or replace terminals with poor contact.
  • Replace a fuel-metering actuator or valve A that fails the specified test.
  • Repair the control module only after verifying its power, grounds, wiring, and output.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration and long journeys if the engine runs roughly or has reduced power, since fueling may be unreliable and the vehicle may stall. If starting or running becomes erratic, stop in a safe place and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
