OBD-II fault code

P0227: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch C Circuit Low

What it means

The PCM detected a low input from the throttle/pedal position sensor or switch C circuit. This indicates a signal below the diagnostic threshold, but does not identify a specific wiring cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The PCM monitors the signal from throttle or accelerator-pedal position sensor C, where fitted. P0227 sets when the C circuit signal is below its lower diagnostic threshold; that low input does not by itself identify a short, poor connection, or sensor failure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for other sensor C or shared reference-voltage codes that could help locate the fault.
  2. Observe sensor C live data while moving the pedal or throttle and determine whether the reading stays low or drops during movement.
  3. Inspect the sensor C connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or a signal wire shorted to ground.
  4. Check the C circuit’s signal, reference, and ground paths using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the wiring and connections pass, test sensor C using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure poor connections at the sensor C connector.
  • Repair a short to ground or damaged insulation in the C signal wire.
  • Replace sensor C if its output remains below specification during testing.
  • Repair a shared reference or ground fault if diagnosis shows it affects the C circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Throttle response may be reduced or inconsistent, so avoid fast traffic and situations requiring quick acceleration. Stop if the pedal no longer produces a predictable response.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
