What it means
Generic electrical fault on throttle/pedal position sensor C (third sensor in some redundant designs).
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Throttle or accelerator-pedal position sensor C, where fitted, sends the PCM a position signal through its own circuit. P0225 indicates a general electrical fault in that C circuit; the code alone does not specify whether the sensor, wiring, connection, or control side is responsible.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Throttle or pedal position sensor C failure
- Damaged wiring or connector
- Poor electrical connection
- Control module fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for other throttle or pedal position codes to determine whether the fault is isolated to sensor C.
- Use live data to observe sensor C while moving the pedal or throttle, if the vehicle exposes that reading to the scan tool.
- Inspect the sensor C connector and harness for damage, loose or corroded terminals, and poor connections.
- Identify the C circuit using the vehicle wiring diagram, then check its power or reference, ground, and signal paths against the manufacturer’s specification.
- Test sensor C and the control circuit using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure before considering a module fault.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded sensor C connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or poor connections in the C circuit.
- Replace throttle or pedal position sensor C if testing confirms it has failed.
- Repair a control-module fault only if the sensor and wiring pass the prescribed checks.
Can I keep driving?
The PCM may limit throttle response if the C circuit fault affects its safety checks, so avoid fast traffic and heavy acceleration. Stop if pedal response becomes unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
