What it means
The B channel voltage is above the upper diagnostic threshold, typically caused by a short to supply voltage or a defective sensor.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The PCM monitors the signal voltage from throttle or accelerator-pedal position sensor B. P0223 sets when that signal rises above the circuit’s upper diagnostic threshold, which can result from a short to supply voltage or a failed sensor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- TPS B circuit shorted to supply voltage
- TPS B element failed
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for other sensor B or reference-voltage codes that could reveal a shared electrical fault.
- Observe sensor B live data while slowly moving the pedal or throttle and confirm whether the reading stays high or changes with movement.
- Inspect the sensor B connector and wiring for damaged insulation, a short to a supply wire, corrosion, or poor terminal contact.
- Check the B circuit’s reference, ground, and signal wiring against the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
- If the wiring tests correctly, test sensor B under the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure to confirm whether it is defective.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring that shorts the sensor B signal to a supply circuit.
- Clean or repair poor connections at the sensor B connector.
- Replace the failed throttle or pedal position sensor B if testing confirms it.
- Correct a related reference-voltage fault if diagnosis shows it is affecting the B signal.
Can I keep driving?
Because a high B signal can trigger reduced or inconsistent throttle response, avoid fast traffic and heavy acceleration until the fault is diagnosed. Stop if the vehicle accelerates unpredictably or does not respond normally.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
