OBD-II fault code

P00BB: Fuel Injector Insufficient Flow - Forced Limited Power

What it means

One or more fuel injectors are delivering less flow than expected, and limited power is indicated.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Fuel injectors meter fuel into their respective cylinders, and the control module can assess whether expected fuel delivery is being achieved. P00BB indicates insufficient flow from one or more injectors and that limited power is indicated. The code alone may not identify which injector is restricted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel injector restricted or clogged
  2. Injector electrical connector or wiring fault
  3. Low fuel pressure
  4. Fuel contamination

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Misfire or rough idle on the affected cylinder
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible fuel smell or smoke from exhaust

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and cylinder-specific misfire or fuel-trim information to identify when the flow fault appeared and whether one cylinder stands out.
  2. Inspect the affected injector connectors and harness for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or wiring that could interrupt injector operation.
  3. Check fuel quality and the low-pressure supply, since inadequate pressure or contaminated fuel can reduce flow across multiple injectors.
  4. Use scan-tool cylinder balance or injector tests, where supported, to compare the suspected cylinder with the others.
  5. Test injector electrical operation and flow using the applicable manufacturer procedure, and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged injector connector or wiring.
  • Correct a low fuel-pressure problem confirmed in the supply system.
  • Clean or replace a restricted injector after confirming insufficient flow.
  • Address contaminated fuel and replace affected fuel-system components if testing shows contamination has caused damage.

Can I keep driving?

With limited power, avoid high speeds and heavy acceleration; a rough-running engine can stall or become less predictable. Stop driving if the engine misfires severely, fuel smell is strong, or smoke appears, because continued misfiring can damage the emissions system.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
