What it means
Low-pressure fuel system pressure is below the expected level under low ambient temperature conditions.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The low-pressure fuel system supplies fuel from the tank toward the engine’s high-pressure system or injectors. The control module compares measured low-side pressure with the pressure it expects, including under cold ambient conditions. P00B9 sets when that pressure falls below the expected level in low temperatures.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Restricted fuel filter or line
- Fuel waxing or gelling in very cold conditions
- Weak low-pressure fuel pump
- Faulty fuel pressure sensor or wiring
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Long cranking or hard starting in cold weather
- Reduced power or hesitation
- Engine may stall
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and ambient temperature to confirm the fault occurred in cold conditions and note engine load and starting status.
- Check the fuel level and inspect the low-pressure fuel lines and filter for visible damage, leaks, kinks, or blockage.
- In very cold weather, check for signs of fuel waxing or gelling and whether the fuel is suitable for the conditions.
- Compare low-side fuel pressure in live data with the manufacturer's specification during priming, cranking, and, if possible, while the fault occurs.
- Inspect the low-pressure pump connector and wiring, then verify the pressure sensor signal and circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Replace a restricted fuel filter or repair a kinked or blocked low-pressure line.
- Use appropriate fuel and restore the vehicle to suitable operating conditions if fuel has waxed or gelled.
- Repair damaged, loose, or corroded pump or pressure-sensor wiring and connectors.
- Replace a faulty low-pressure fuel pump or pressure sensor after confirming the fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine starts and runs smoothly, limit driving and avoid hard acceleration, especially in cold conditions. Stop if it stalls or loses substantial power, since low fuel pressure can leave you without dependable engine response.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
