What it means
The fuel pressure relief control system did not respond as expected or may be stuck off.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The fuel pressure relief control system uses a controlled valve or solenoid to regulate when fuel pressure can be relieved. P009E sets when the system does not respond as expected or appears stuck off, so pressure relief may not occur when commanded.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid stuck closed by contamination
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
- Power loss especially at high load or rpm
- Possible long cranking time
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and commanded-versus-reported fuel-pressure information, if available, to see when the relief response failed.
- Inspect the relief-control connector and wiring for loose connections, damage, or an electrical fault that could prevent the solenoid from operating.
- Check for stored circuit codes and diagnose those first, since a wiring or control-signal problem can mimic a stuck mechanism.
- Use the manufacturer's procedure to command the relief control and compare its response with fuel-pressure data.
- If the electrical command is correct but response remains absent, inspect the valve or solenoid for sticking, contamination, debris, or wear.
Common fixes
- Restore a loose or damaged electrical connection to the relief control.
- Repair wiring faults that prevent the control solenoid from responding.
- Clean or service a contaminated, sticking relief mechanism where the manufacturer permits it.
- Replace a worn or mechanically stuck relief valve or solenoid confirmed by testing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration, towing, and other high-load driving because the engine may lose power or stall when fuel demand rises. If starting becomes difficult or the engine stalls, stop driving and arrange repair.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
