What it means
A fault is detected in the fuel pressure relief control circuit, indicating an open circuit or interruption.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The fuel pressure relief control circuit carries the electrical command or feedback used to manage fuel pressure relief. The control module sets P009B when it detects an interruption or open in that circuit, so it may be unable to control or verify pressure relief.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring break
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
- Power loss especially at high load or rpm
- Possible long cranking time
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and related fuel-pressure codes to see whether the fault appeared during starting, idle, or high-load operation.
- With the ignition off, inspect the relief-control wiring and connectors for a break, damage, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
- Check connector fit and terminal condition, then compare continuity through the circuit with the manufacturer's wiring information.
- Check the circuit conductors for an open between the control module and the relief-control component, isolating the circuit as specified by the manufacturer.
- If the wiring and terminals pass, check the control component and module connector for an internal open or cracked solder joint using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a broken or damaged relief-control wire.
- Reseat or replace a pushed-back connector terminal and restore a secure connection.
- Repair or replace a connector with poor contact.
- Repair the affected module or replace a confirmed faulty component.
Can I keep driving?
A brief, gentle trip may be possible if the engine runs normally, but hard starting or stalling can leave you stranded. Avoid heavy acceleration and high engine load; stop if it stalls or loses power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
