OBD-II fault code

P009D: Fuel Pressure Relief Control Circuit High

What it means

The control module monitors the fuel pressure relief control circuit signal and sets this code when the signal rises above its expected electrical range. The code indicates a high circuit signal; it does not by itself confirm a mechanical fault in the fuel system.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The fuel pressure relief control circuit carries the electrical command or feedback used to manage fuel pressure relief. P009D sets when the control module sees that circuit signal above its expected electrical range, which can result from a wiring fault even if the relief mechanism itself is sound.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and related fuel-pressure codes to establish when the high signal was detected.
  2. Inspect the relief-control harness for pinched wires, damaged insulation, and contact with battery-positive wiring.
  3. Check the connector for corrosion or damaged terminals, then verify terminal fit and circuit connections using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Test the signal conductor for a short to battery voltage using the manufacturer's procedure, with the circuit safely isolated as directed.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass, test the relief-control component and module circuit before considering a component or module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Reroute or repair a pinched wire that contacts a positive-voltage source.
  • Repair corroded or damaged connector terminals and secure the connection.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty relief-control component or repair the module if testing identifies it.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only gently and only if the engine starts and runs predictably; stalling or power loss may occur under load. Avoid high-speed driving, heavy acceleration, and towing until the high-signal fault is corrected.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
