OBD-II fault code

P0026: Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1)

What it means

The ECU detected that the bank 1 intake valve oil control solenoid does not respond as expected. Common causes are sludge in the oil passages, a sticking solenoid, or low oil pressure that prevents proper VVT phasing on the intake side.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 1 intake valve control solenoid meters oil to adjust intake cam timing as engine conditions change. The module monitors the commanded response and cam timing, and sets P0026 when the Bank 1 intake control system’s response falls outside its expected range or performance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oil control valve mechanically stuck
  2. Sludge or debris in oil passages
  3. Low oil pressure or wrong oil viscosity

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle or engine hesitation
  • Reduced power or acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual Bank 1 intake cam timing in live data to see when the response falls behind or behaves inconsistently.
  2. Check the oil level, condition, and viscosity against the vehicle requirements because low or unsuitable oil can prevent intake cam adjustment.
  3. Inspect the Bank 1 intake oil control solenoid and its connector for sludge, debris, corrosion, loose pins, or wiring damage.
  4. Test the solenoid and its control circuit using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification, and check whether the valve responds when commanded.
  5. If the electrical and oil checks pass, inspect the Bank 1 intake oil passages and cam phaser for restriction or sticking.

Common fixes

  • Correct the oil level and replace unsuitable or contaminated oil and filter with the specified grade.
  • Clean a serviceable Bank 1 intake oil control solenoid and clear accessible oil passage debris as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Repair a damaged connector or wiring at the Bank 1 intake control solenoid.
  • Replace the sticking or faulty solenoid, or repair a confirmed oil passage or phaser problem.

Can I keep driving?

With a steady warning light and mild symptoms, keep any drive short and gentle; hesitation and reduced power can worsen, especially under acceleration. Stop if the engine stalls or runs very roughly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
