OBD-II fault code

C05A4: Wheel Speed Sensors Supply Circuit Low

What it means

Wheel speed sensors supply voltage below expected range. Wheel-speed signals feed ABS, ESC, traction control, transmission and odometer — a single dropped signal disables all of these safety functions until repaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The wheel speed sensor supply circuit powers the sensors whose readings support ABS, stability control, traction control, and other vehicle functions. C05A4 sets when the monitored supply voltage is lower than expected, which can result from a short to ground, poor connector contact, or damaged wiring.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Read ABS codes, freeze-frame data, and live wheel-speed readings to see whether one or more sensors have lost signal along with the low supply fault.
  2. Inspect wheel-speed sensor supply connectors and harnesses for corrosion, water, pushed-back pins, or insulation worn through to ground.
  3. Gently move accessible supply wiring while watching live data to check for an intermittent short or poor connection.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, test the supply circuit for a short to ground and check its connector contact and continuity to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the shared supply wiring passes, check individual sensor connections and the brake module's supply output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose supply circuit connector terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring that is shorted to ground.
  • Repair a damaged supply wire or connector causing excessive resistance.
  • Repair or replace a sensor or brake module only if circuit tests show it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

ABS, stability control, and traction control may be disabled, and the speedometer may behave erratically. Use extra stopping distance, avoid slippery roads, and limit driving until the sensor supply is restored.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
