OBD-II fault code

C05A3: Wheel Speed Sensors Supply Circuit High

What it means

Wheel speed sensors supply voltage above expected range. Wheel-speed signals feed ABS, ESC, traction control, transmission and odometer — a single dropped signal disables all of these safety functions until repaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The wheel speed sensor supply circuit provides power to the vehicle's wheel speed sensors, whose signals are used by ABS, stability control, traction control, and other systems. C05A3 sets when the monitored supply voltage is higher than expected, such as from a short to battery voltage or a supply wire pinched against a power source.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Read ABS codes, freeze-frame data, and live wheel-speed readings to check whether the supply fault has affected one or more wheel-speed signals.
  2. Inspect the wheel-speed sensor supply wiring and connectors for corrosion, water, pin damage, or a wire pinched against battery-positive wiring.
  3. Move accessible supply harness sections gently while monitoring live data to see whether the fault or wheel-speed signals change.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test the shared sensor supply circuit for an unintended connection to battery voltage and check connector contact to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the supply wiring passes, test the affected sensor connections and brake control module supply monitoring circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure connectors and replace damaged or corroded terminals in the wheel-speed sensor supply circuit.
  • Repair pinched or chafed supply wiring.
  • Repair a supply wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Repair or replace a wheel-speed sensor or brake module only if testing confirms it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

ABS, stability control, and traction control may be unavailable, and the speedometer may be unreliable. Drive cautiously, leave extra stopping distance, avoid slippery roads, and do not rely on those systems until the supply fault is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
