OBD-II fault code

C0554: Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The longitudinal acceleration sensor signal is above the expected range. This can affect stability-control functions that use the sensor.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The longitudinal acceleration sensor reports vehicle acceleration to the stability-control module. C0554 sets when its signal rises above the expected range, which may result from a sensor fault or a signal wire shorted to voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty longitudinal acceleration sensor
  2. Signal wire shorted to voltage
  3. Damaged wiring or poor connector contact

Symptoms

  • Stability-control warning light
  • Stability control or traction control may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live longitudinal acceleration data to confirm the signal is high and see when the fault occurs.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for loose or corroded terminals, damaged insulation, and contact with powered wiring.
  3. Use the vehicle wiring diagram to test the signal circuit for a short to voltage and check the sensor supply and ground.
  4. Compare signal, supply, and ground readings with the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a circuit fault from a sensor fault.
  5. If the wiring and supplies pass, test the longitudinal acceleration sensor and check for any vehicle-specific calibration requirement.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to voltage or damaged insulation in the sensor harness.
  • Clean or replace damaged connector terminals and secure the connection.
  • Correct a sensor supply or ground fault identified during testing.
  • Replace the longitudinal acceleration sensor if its signal stays high with a sound circuit and correct supplies.

Can I keep driving?

Stability or traction control may be limited, so drive gently and avoid slippery roads or abrupt manoeuvres. If handling changes or a reduced-function mode appears, stop safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
