OBD-II fault code

C0553: Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The longitudinal acceleration sensor signal is below the expected range. This can affect stability-control functions that use the sensor.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The longitudinal acceleration sensor reports vehicle acceleration to the stability-control module. C0553 sets when the sensor signal is below the expected range, which can point to a sensor fault, a wiring or contact problem, or a supply or ground issue.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty longitudinal acceleration sensor
  2. Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
  3. Sensor supply or ground fault

Symptoms

  • Stability-control warning light
  • Stability control or traction control may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and inspect live longitudinal acceleration data to confirm the signal is low and note when the fault occurs.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or damage that could pull the signal low.
  3. Check the sensor's power supply and ground connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  4. Test the signal circuit for shorts to ground and poor terminal contact, then compare supply, ground, and signal with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit and supplies pass, test the longitudinal acceleration sensor and check for vehicle-specific calibration requirements.

Common fixes

  • Repair a damaged wire or poor connector contact in the longitudinal acceleration sensor circuit.
  • Clean or replace corroded terminals and restore a secure connector fit.
  • Repair a sensor supply or ground fault.
  • Replace the longitudinal acceleration sensor if its output remains low with a sound circuit and correct supply.

Can I keep driving?

Stability or traction control may be limited, so drive gently and avoid slippery roads or sudden manoeuvres. If the vehicle enters a reduced-function mode or handling changes, stop safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
