What it means
The control module checks whether the longitudinal acceleration sensor’s reading is plausible for vehicle motion. It sets this code when the reading is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected.
How it works
The longitudinal acceleration sensor measures forward and backward vehicle acceleration for the stability-control system. C0552 sets when its reading is implausible, outside the expected range, or does not change as vehicle motion would lead the module to expect.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor reading drifted
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Stability-control warning light on
- Traction or stability control may be limited
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review live longitudinal acceleration data with the vehicle stationary and during a cautious, controlled drive.
- Inspect the sensor mounting for looseness or damage, since movement or vibration can distort the reading.
- Check the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or intermittent contact.
- Compare the sensor reading with vehicle motion and other available stability-control data to identify drift or an unresponsive signal.
- Test the sensor and its circuit against the manufacturer's specification, including any required calibration checks in vehicle service information.
Common fixes
- Secure the longitudinal acceleration sensor mounting if it is loose.
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the sensor connector.
- Replace the sensor if its reading remains out of range or drifts after the circuit and mounting pass inspection.
- Perform any required vehicle-specific sensor calibration after repairs.
Can I keep driving?
Stability or traction control may be limited, so drive gently and allow extra room for manoeuvres, especially on slippery roads. Avoid relying on electronic stability assistance until the fault is resolved.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
