OBD-II fault code

C0536: Motor Control B Circuit/Open

What it means

Motor Control B Circuit/Open: the circuit is open. Likely a broken wire, disconnected connector, or failed component.

How it works

Motor Control B is monitored by the ABS module through its own electrical circuit. C0536 sets when the module detects an open path in channel B, preventing the expected circuit response; it identifies channel B rather than channel A.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring break
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • Traction or stability control warning light on
  • ABS functions may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Use an ABS-capable scan tool to save freeze-frame data and determine whether C0536 is current or intermittent.
  2. Inspect the Motor Control B connector for disconnection, looseness, corrosion, or a pin pushed back in its housing.
  3. Trace the channel B harness for broken, pulled, or damaged wires, especially around bends and mounting points.
  4. Check channel B circuit continuity and terminal contact using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the external circuit passes, test the associated motor or actuator and ABS module for an internal open as specified by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose Motor Control B connector.
  • Repair a broken channel B wire or replace its damaged terminal.
  • Repair a failed internal connection in the motor or actuator if confirmed by testing.
  • Repair or replace the ABS module if its internal circuit is confirmed open.

Can I keep driving?

ABS, traction control, or stability control may be reduced or unavailable, although ordinary braking may still work. Drive cautiously, leave more stopping distance, and avoid conditions that call for sudden braking.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
