What it means
Motor Control B Circuit Low: the signal voltage is below the expected range. Often a short to ground or high resistance in the wiring.
How it works
The ABS module monitors the electrical signal for Motor Control B. C0538 sets when the channel B signal falls below its expected range, which can indicate a short to ground or excessive circuit resistance; it identifies a low condition in channel B, not a high condition or channel A fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- Traction or stability control warning light on
- ABS functions may be limited
How to diagnose it
- Use an ABS-capable scan tool to save freeze-frame data and review Motor Control B live data and related codes.
- Inspect channel B wiring for chafing through insulation, contact with the chassis, corrosion, or loose connector pins.
- Use scan data to see whether the low reading is steady or intermittent, and check for a response to gentle harness movement using the manufacturer's safe procedure.
- Test the channel B circuit for a short to ground, excessive resistance, and poor terminal contact using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- If the circuit passes, test the associated motor or actuator and ABS module according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed Motor Control B wiring that is contacting ground.
- Clean or replace corroded, loose, or damaged channel B terminals.
- Repair high-resistance connections or damaged channel B wiring.
- Replace a failed motor or actuator, or repair the ABS module, only if testing confirms the fault.
Can I keep driving?
ABS, traction control, or stability control may be limited or unavailable, though ordinary braking may still work. Drive gently, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid slippery roads until the fault is repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
