What it means
The ABS module monitors the left rear inlet valve, which controls hydraulic pressure applied to that wheel. It sets this code when the valve circuit or operation does not respond as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The left rear inlet valve in the ABS hydraulic unit controls pressure entering the left rear brake circuit during ABS and stability control. The module monitors the valve coil circuit and valve response, and sets C0018 when the circuit or operation does not respond as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Inlet valve coil failure
- Valve stuck or contaminated
- Damaged wiring or connector
- ABS module fault
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read ABS module codes and freeze-frame data to determine when the left rear inlet-control fault occurred and whether other valve or supply faults are present.
- Inspect the ABS unit connector and wiring serving the left rear inlet valve for corrosion, loose pins, rubbing, or damage.
- Use a compatible scan tool to command the left rear inlet valve, if supported, and check whether its reported response matches the module’s expected operation.
- With the system safely disabled according to the manufacturer’s procedure, test the left rear inlet-valve coil and circuit for opens or shorts against the manufacturer’s specification.
- If electrical checks pass, investigate contamination or a sticking valve within the left rear hydraulic path, then consider an ABS module fault only after verifying its feeds and grounds.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the left rear inlet-valve connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Replace a failed left rear inlet-valve coil or valve if it is serviceable separately.
- Correct contaminated fluid or a sticking valve using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Repair or replace the ABS hydraulic control unit if testing confirms an internal module fault.
Can I keep driving?
Braking may still work, but ABS and stability control can be disabled and brake assistance may be reduced. Avoid slippery roads and hard braking, and stop safely if braking feels abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
