What it means
The ABS monitors how quickly hydraulic pressure releases from the left front wheel circuit during a commanded release. It sets this code when pressure release takes longer than the module’s calibrated limit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
During ABS pressure release, the left front outlet valve lets brake fluid leave that wheel circuit so the wheel can regain rotation. The module monitors how quickly pressure falls after commanding release and sets C0012 when the left front circuit takes longer than its calibrated limit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sluggish or stuck outlet valve
- Restricted hydraulic passage
- Contaminated brake fluid
- ABS hydraulic control unit fault
- Faulty pressure-sensing or monitoring circuit
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Check ABS codes and freeze-frame data for the event conditions and any left front outlet-valve or pressure-monitoring faults recorded with C0012.
- Inspect the left front brake hose and visible hydraulic connections for damage or signs of restriction, and check fluid condition and level.
- Use the scan tool’s supported ABS actuator test to command left front pressure release and compare the reported response with other available wheel-circuit data.
- Check the left front outlet-valve wiring and connector, then test the valve circuit and monitoring circuit according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
- If electrical checks pass, have the left front hydraulic path and ABS unit assessed for a sluggish valve, contamination, or an internal restriction.
Common fixes
- Repair a damaged connector or wiring fault affecting the left front outlet valve or its monitoring circuit.
- Replace a sluggish left front outlet valve if testing confirms it is faulty and it is serviceable separately.
- Correct contaminated fluid or a restricted left front hydraulic passage using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Repair the ABS hydraulic unit or pressure-monitoring circuit if tests isolate an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
ABS or stability control may be disabled, and the left front wheel may not release pressure as expected during an ABS event. Avoid high speeds and slippery roads; stop if the vehicle pulls, a wheel drags, or braking feels abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
