OBD-II fault code

B00D1: Passenger Seatbelt Indicator (Subfault)

What it means

Fault on the passenger seat belt warning indicator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the airbag (SRS) or body-system warning light

How it works

The passenger seatbelt indicator warns about passenger seatbelt status through a lamp or display. B00D1 is set when the restraint control module detects a fault in the passenger indicator circuit or display, so the warning may not work as intended.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Failed passenger seatbelt indicator lamp or display
  2. Open or short in indicator wiring
  3. Loose or corroded connector
  4. Fault in the restraint control module

Symptoms

  • Warning light or symbol related to the affected system
  • Comfort or safety function impaired

How to diagnose it

  1. Read and record B00D1 and any related passenger belt or indicator codes using a scan tool that can communicate with the restraint module.
  2. Check whether the passenger seatbelt warning display completes its startup check and responds as expected to passenger belt status.
  3. Inspect the passenger indicator display and accessible connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or physical damage.
  4. Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure to test the passenger indicator circuit for opens, shorts, and continuity.
  5. Where scan-tool data supports it, compare the module’s passenger indicator command with the display response and check against manufacturer information.
  6. If the display and circuit are sound, verify restraint-module power, ground, and connectors before considering module failure.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded passenger indicator connector.
  • Repair an open or short in the passenger seatbelt indicator circuit.
  • Repair or replace the failed passenger warning lamp or display, as applicable.
  • Correct a confirmed restraint-module power, ground, or connector fault.
  • Replace or reprogram the restraint control module only if testing confirms it is defective.

Can I keep driving?

The passenger belt warning may be unreliable, so do not depend on the indicator to confirm a passenger is buckled. Ensure passengers wear their belts and arrange diagnosis soon, especially if the SRS warning is also on.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
