What it means
This code identifies a fault associated with the passenger side air bag deployment control. The restraint control module sets it when it detects a problem in that deployment control; the exact fault is specified by accompanying subfault information.
How it works
The restraint control module monitors the passenger-side airbag deployment circuit, including the curtain airbag circuit when that is the affected subfault. It stores B0029 when it detects an electrical problem, while the accompanying subfault information identifies the specific circuit condition.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Curtain airbag squib circuit open or shorted
- Wiring damage in A/B/C-pillar
- SRS control module fault
Symptoms
- Airbag warning light on
How to diagnose it
- Read the SRS code and its subfault details, plus freeze-frame or event data if available, to identify the circuit condition before inspecting parts.
- Check the A-, B-, and C-pillar trim areas for signs of prior repairs, pinched wiring, water entry, or impact damage near the passenger-side curtain airbag harness.
- With the SRS disabled according to the vehicle service procedure, inspect accessible connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage; do not probe an inflator connector with an ordinary meter.
- Use the manufacturer's SRS test procedure and approved test equipment to check the identified squib circuit for an open, short, or resistance outside specification.
- If the harness and connections pass the specified checks, follow the service procedure to assess the restraint control module and confirm the repair by rescanning.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose connector or repair damaged pillar-harness wiring using the approved SRS repair procedure.
- Repair an open or short in the passenger-side curtain deployment circuit as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
- Replace a confirmed faulty curtain airbag module if its inflator circuit fails the specified test.
- Replace or reprogram the restraint control module only after the circuit and airbag module have been verified.
Can I keep driving?
The airbag warning light means the passenger-side restraint system may not work as designed in a crash. Drive only as needed to have the SRS fault diagnosed, and avoid disturbing pillar trim or wiring.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
