OBD-II fault code

P0101: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not track engine load plausibly. The ECU compares MAF readings against load calculated from RPM, throttle position and intake pressure; persistent disagreement triggers this code.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The MAF sensor measures incoming air, while the ECM checks whether that reading makes sense alongside engine speed, throttle position, and other load information. P0101 sets when the MAF signal is present but persistently falls outside the expected range or does not track engine load plausibly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. MAF sensor contaminated (oil, dust)
  2. Unmetered air leak after MAF
  3. Air filter heavily clogged
  4. Wiring/connector fault to MAF

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and graph live MAF, RPM, throttle position, and intake pressure during idle and a gentle rise in engine speed to see when the readings disagree.
  2. Inspect the intake duct from the MAF to the throttle body for splits, loose clamps, disconnected hoses, or other paths that let unmetered air enter.
  3. Check whether the air filter is heavily restricted and confirm the MAF is correctly seated and oriented.
  4. Inspect the MAF element, connector, and harness for contamination, corrosion, loose pins, or damage.
  5. Test the MAF circuit and compare its output with the manufacturer's specification; check for intake leaks before condemning the sensor.
  6. Repair any leak or wiring issue, then recheck live data under the conditions recorded in the freeze frame.

Common fixes

  • Seal a split intake duct or reconnect a loose hose or clamp downstream of the MAF.
  • Replace a heavily clogged air filter.
  • Clean a contaminated MAF element with suitable MAF cleaner, following the product instructions.
  • Repair damaged MAF wiring or connector terminals.
  • Replace the MAF sensor if its readings remain implausible after intake leaks and circuit faults are ruled out.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, a short gentle drive is generally reasonable, but avoid heavy acceleration or towing while airflow readings are unreliable. A substantial air leak or worsening mixture can cause poor running and increase emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
