What it means
This warning usually means the battery is not being charged properly while the engine is running. Red signals a serious charging-system fault that may leave the vehicle without electrical power; the colour and exact behaviour vary by manufacturer.
What the symbol looks like: A battery outline with plus and minus signs at its terminals.
Why it comes on
- Alternator or generator fault
- Loose, damaged, or slipping drive belt
- Battery fault
- Loose or corroded battery or charging connections
- Charging system wiring or control fault
What to do
- Switch off non-essential electrical equipment if it is safe to do so.
- Head to a safe stopping place or repairer promptly, since the vehicle may lose power.
- If the belt is visibly damaged, the engine is overheating, or other warnings appear, stop safely and switch off.
- Arrange a charging-system inspection; do not touch moving belts or exposed electrical parts.
Can I keep driving?
A short drive to a safe place may be possible, but the vehicle can stall when the battery charge is depleted. Avoid unnecessary electrical loads and long trips; stop if the engine overheats or steering assistance changes.
Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
