OBD-II fault code

P0562: System Voltage Low

What it means

The control module monitors system voltage and sets this code when voltage falls below its calibrated threshold. Low voltage may be present during starting or while the engine is running.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control modules monitor the vehicle's electrical supply, which comes from the battery and, with the engine running, the charging system. P0562 sets when system voltage falls below the module's calibrated threshold, during starting or while the engine is operating.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Battery aged or weak
  2. Alternator undercharging
  3. Corroded battery terminals or ground strap

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or battery warning light may come on
  • Slow or difficult engine starting
  • Lights may dim
  • Electrical accessories may operate weakly or erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and note whether low voltage occurred during cranking or with the engine running, then check live system voltage for dips.
  2. Inspect battery terminals, main grounds, and alternator connections for looseness, corrosion, or damaged cables.
  3. Check battery condition and charge state with an appropriate battery test.
  4. Measure charging-system output under the conditions specified by the manufacturer and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the battery and alternator test normally, check for excessive voltage drop across power and ground connections or an abnormal electrical load.

Common fixes

  • Clean and tighten corroded battery terminals and ground connections.
  • Charge or replace a battery that fails its condition test.
  • Repair a damaged charging cable or ground strap.
  • Repair or replace an alternator that fails the specified charging test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary trips if starting is slow, lights dim, or electrical systems behave erratically, as the vehicle may fail to start or lose electrical functions. If the battery warning light stays on or the engine begins to falter, stop somewhere safe and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
