Detour / diversion

Shows an alternative route around a closure, obstruction or prohibited turn.

Diversion signs guide drivers along an alternative route. Follow the arrows and subsequent signs through the junctions on that route.

In the United States, M4-9R is a rectangular orange sign with black DETOUR lettering and a right-pointing arrow. It indicates a right turn along the diversion.

Vienna sign G,3 shows an indirect route for turning left where a left turn at the next junction is prohibited. Its diagram shows the route to follow to reach the road on the left.

How it looks in each country

Official sign in each country; the code is its number in the national rules. Signs that come in two directions show the left and the right version.
