Brake software fault may cause overheating
Faulty stability control software may leave residual hydraulic pressure, causing the brakes to apply and heat up. This could further increase brake heat, affect the fluid and cause a fire in the wheel housing. The software will be updated.
Official DVSA recall text
- Component
- BRAKES MAY OVERHEAT CREATING A RISK OF SMOKE AND/OR FIRE
- Defect
- The software for the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is faulty. The fault could lead to a low residual pressure in the hydraulic system so the brakes are applied and gain heat. This increased heat will apply the brakes further and could adversely affect the brake fluid. Fire in the wheel housing cannot be ruled out.
- Remedy
- Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected and update the software for the ESP.
Stability control software may keep brakes applied
The stability control software may keep the brakes slightly applied. Prolonged brake drag can heat components, affect braking performance and increase crash risk, or overheat the brakes and increase fire risk. Dealers will update the stability control software, free of charge.
Official NHTSA recall text
- Component
- ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Defect
- Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2015 SLK 250, 2016 SLK 350, 2016-2017 SLC 300, and 2017 SLC 43 AMG vehicles. In these vehicles, the electronic stability control (ESC) system software may incorrectly keep the brakes slightly applied.
- Consequence
- If brake pads are constantly applied over long periods of driving, the brake components may heat up, affecting braking performance and increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the dragging brakes may overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy
- MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the ESC system, free of charge. The recall began June 9, 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
