What is the Lada Niva?

The Lada Niva is a compact four-wheel-drive vehicle with an upright shape and a practical cabin. Conceived to bring off-road ability to a car suited to rural use, it became one of the best-known models in Lada’s range.

Production began in 1977. The Niva’s enduring formula pairs a compact body with four-wheel drive. The 2121 and 21213/21214 lines are listed in European and French records from 2010 onward.

Generations and engines

The 2121 and 21213/21214 lines are both listed from 2010 onward. Their overlapping dates reflect closely related branches of the Niva family, rather than a clear break between wholly new designs.

In the EU, the listed 1.7-litre engines produce 59 kW (80 PS) to 61 kW (83 PS). The French ADEME listings include petrol and LPG versions producing 60 kW (81 PS) to 61 kW (83 PS).

How economical is the Lada Niva?

The lowest listed French consumption is 9.5 L/100 km on the NEDC test. In EU/EEA registration figures, the most registered type was the 1.7-litre petrol with 61 kW (83 PS), with its strongest listed periods in 2019, 2011–2012 and 2018.

NEDC is an older European test procedure. European figures may use NEDC or WLTP, depending on the vehicle and year, so results from different procedures are not directly comparable.

Where was the Niva sold?

EU/EEA registration figures span 2010–2025 and include 38 versions. French ADEME listings cover 2012–2015 and include 11 versions.
