What is the Geo Prizm?
The Geo Prizm was a compact car sold in the United States. Its conventional four-door sedan layout made it a familiar choice for everyday driving, and first-generation models also came as hatchbacks. Within Geo’s small-car lineup, the Prizm sat above the smaller Metro.
The Prizm was closely related to the Toyota Corolla and built at NUMMI, the joint venture between General Motors and Toyota. Toyota’s history records production of the Chevrolet Prizm at NUMMI beginning in 1988, reflecting the partnership behind the car.
Generations and design
The first generation ran from 1989 to 1992 and used the E90 and AE92 codes. It was offered as a sedan and hatchback. The second generation, coded E100 and AE101, followed from 1993 to 1997 with a redesigned body. Both generations were sold in the United States.
The Geo brand ended after 1997, and the Prizm name continued under Chevrolet.
Engines and official fuel economy
Across its Geo years, the Prizm used petrol engines ranging from 1.6 L to 1.8 L. United States EPA figures cover 24 versions from 1989 to 1997, with a best combined rating of 29 MPG. EPA results use the US test procedure; European WLTP and NEDC ratings and Canada’s 5-cycle results come from different procedures.
The Prizm paired compact-car dimensions with a choice of petrol engines across its two generations.
