What is the Eagle Premier?

The Eagle Premier was a full-size sedan sold in the United States from 1988 through 1992. It was developed by American Motors Corporation (AMC) in partnership with Renault, then reached showrooms under Chrysler’s new Eagle marque after Chrysler acquired AMC.

Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro shaped the Premier’s design. Its AMC and Renault roots gave it a distinct place in Eagle’s early range, alongside the smaller Medallion.

Generations and design

The Premier had one generation, sold from 1988 to 1992. It was a four-door sedan with front-wheel drive, built on a platform identified as B-body.

The car’s development began before Chrysler took over AMC. Chrysler continued the project and marketed the finished sedan as an Eagle in the United States and Canada.

Engines and fuel consumption

The US petrol range covered engine sizes from 2.5 L to 3.0 L. The best combined EPA rating was 24 MPG, and the lowest listed EPA consumption was 9.8 L/100 km.

These are US EPA ratings. European WLTP and NEDC procedures and Canada’s 5-cycle test work differently, so results from those markets are not directly comparable.

Where was the Premier sold?

The Premier was sold in the United States and Canada. Its model years ran from 1988 through 1992, and Chrysler marketed it as part of the Eagle line after acquiring AMC.
