  1. Starter motor relay may short circuit

Reported March 2, 2026Model years 2021–2023DVSA recall R/2026/054EU Safety Gate SR/00569/2651,053 vehicles affected

Deposits in the starter motor relay may increase contact resistance, causing failed starts or a short circuit that could lead to a thermal event. The starter motor will be replaced with a different design.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
    Replace the Engine Starter Motor
    Defect
The Safety Recall relates to the engine starter motor. The fault relates to the RSW22 starter RWT (reinforced water tightness). It was found that with RWT starters an increased abrasion of the magnetic contact can cause the growth of deposits at the lowest point of the relay interior. This in turn may increase the relay contact resistance resulting in false starts or even causing short circuits and possibly a thermal reaction. In case of a short circuit the possibility of a thermal event cannot be excluded. This may happen while attempting to start the vehicle or while driving due to vibrations causing a short circuit due to moving deposits.
    Remedy
On the affected vehicles the starter motor will be replaced with a variant by another supplier with a different design. Until the repair has been completed it is recommended to not leave the vehicle running unattended after starting the engine.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 128i Coupe, 128i Convertible, 328i Sedan, 328i xDrive Sedan, 328i Coupe, 328i Convertible, 328i Sports Wagon and Z4 sDrive 30i, 2011-2012 135i Coupe, 135i Convertible, 335i Sedan, X5 xDrive 35i, and X6 xDrive 35i, 2011 335i xDrive Sedan, 335i Coupe, 335i Convertible, 528i Sedan, 535i Sedan, 535i xDrive Sedan, X3 xDrive 28i, and X3 xDrive 35i, 2010 X3 xDrive 30i, and X5 xDrive 30i, 2012 640i Coupe, and 640i Convertible and 2010-2012 535i Gran Turismo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the bolts that secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment (VANOS) unit can loosen over time and may possibly break.
    Consequence
If the bolts loosen or break the engine may have reduced power or stall. An engine stall increases the risk of a crash.
    Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the four VANOS housing bolts for both VANOS units (intake and exhaust), free of charge. In addition, owners of approximately 170,172 model year 2010-2012 BMW vehicles equipped with inline 6 cylinder engines not covered by this recall, will receive an extended warranty to address this condition. The recall began on September 24, 2014. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
    Notes

  27. Oil pump may fail to maintain pressure

Reported September 26, 2012Model years 2012DVSA recall R/2012/109160 vehicles affected

The oil pump may not provide enough pressure, which can cause severe engine damage, oil loss or a sudden pressure drop while driving. The oil pump will be replaced with the correct version.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
    ENGINE MAY FAIL
    Defect
In individual cases the oil pump may no longer provide the required oil pressure. This may cause severe engine damage. Additionally the occurrence of critical driving situations cannot be ruled out because the oil pressure may drop suddenly while driving. The driver will usually notice a drop in the engine oil pressure due to the check control message ''Low oil Pressure''. It is also possible the engine block will be damaged and as a result engine oil may be lost.
    Remedy
The oil pump will be replaced with the correct version.
  28. Battery cable connection may overheat

Reported May 24, 2012Model years 2003–2010DVSA recall R/2012/0391,029,608 vehicles affected

An incorrectly fitted cover may allow the battery cable connection to loosen or become affected by humidity, increasing resistance. The vehicle may not start, and the connection could overheat and cause a fire in the luggage area. The clips will be checked, and the cover replaced and sealed.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
    RISK OF FIRE
    Defect
The positive battery cable routed from the vehicle battery to the engine bay consists of one cable in the luggage compartment and one cable in the underbody. Both cable are connected by a screw connection and covered by a plastic cover. In single cases the plastic cover may have been fitted incorrectly during the vehicle production. Over time an incorrectly fitted cover could cause the screw connections to come loose leading to an increased resistance also humidity may affect the connection and cause high resistance and drop in current. This can lead to the vehicle not starting and in extreme cases the connection could over heat leading to the possibility of a fire in the luggage area.
    Remedy
The clips on the battery will be checked the cover replaced and sealed.
  29. Turbocharger water pump may overheat

Reported April 27, 2012DVSA recall R/2012/049105 vehicles affected

A crack in the additional turbocharger water pump may melt its plug connections and housing, causing heat damage and, in exceptional cases, smouldering that could lead to a vehicle fire. Replace the pump with a more robust version.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
    FIRE MAY OCCUR
    Defect
Some engines are fitted with an additional water pump for the turbo charger. In some circumstances a crack may develop which then leads to melting of the plug connections and the housing. Further heat development may then lead to scorch damage. In exceptional cases such overheating can lead to smouldering of the water pump. If smouldering occurs an engine compartment fire and vehicle fire cannot be excluded.
    Remedy
The water pump will be replaced for a new more robust version.
  30. Auxiliary water pump circuit board may overheat

Reported April 10, 2012Model years 2012NHTSA campaign 12V1610002,846 vehicles affected

The auxiliary water pump circuit board can overheat, causing the pump to smoulder or leading to an engine compartment or vehicle fire. Dealers will replace the pump free of charge.

Reported November 17, 2011Model years 2007–2011DVSA recall R/2011/1472,785 vehicles affected

Moisture may cause the turbocharger coolant pump to short circuit. It may overheat, melt its plug connection and housing, and in extreme cases cause a localised fire. The pump will be replaced.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
    SHORT CIRCUIT MAY OCCUR
    Defect
Due to the ingress of moisture it is possible that a short circuit can occur in the additional coolant pump for the exhaust turbocharger. The driver will be informed of the issue by a warning message on the display in the instrument panel. If not addressed it is possible for further heat build up in the pump which may cause the plug connection and housing to melt and in extreme cases a localised fire in the engine compartment or vehicle.

  36. Rear axle carrier links or struts may fail

Reported July 15, 2008Model years 2008DVSA recall R/2008/1003,990 vehicles affected

A defect in a material joint may cause rear axle carrier link or strut holders to fail, changing the vehicle's handling and potentially causing an accident. The carrier will be checked and, if necessary, replaced with a quality assured one.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
    REAR AXLE CARRIER MAY FAIL
    Defect
It has been identified that defects in a material joint may have resulted during the heat treatment of individual components of the rear axle carrier. This may result in failure of the holders of the links and struts even under normal driving conditions. Should the holder of a link fail whilst the vehicle is in motion the handling characteristics of the vehicle would undergo an unexpected change which could result in an accident.
    Remedy
Recalled vehicles will be checked and if necessary fitted with a quality assured rear axle carrier.
