    POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
    Defect
VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2008 AND AUGUST 2009. THE WIRING HARNESS OF A TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN THE DIRECT SHIFT GEARBOX (DSG) MAY HAVE CONNECTOR WIRES THAT WERE INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED. WITH INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED CONNECTOR WIRES, A TEMPERATURE SENSOR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FALSELY DETECT A HIGH GEARBOX OIL TEMPERATURE, CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO ABRUPTLY SHIFT TO NEUTRAL. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE SELECTOR LEVER POSITION INDICATOR WITHIN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WILL FLASH. IN ADDITION, THE "DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL" INDICATOR LIGHT WILL BE ILLUMINATED, ALERTING THE DRIVER TO APPLY THE BRAKES.
    Consequence
THE ABRUPT SHIFT TO NEUTRAL COULD LEAD TO A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
    Remedy
VOLKSWAGEN WILL REPROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE WITH UPDATED SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 20, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

Reported September 6, 2006Model years 2005DVSA recall R/2006/13692 vehicles affected

Gas may escape through a defective weld in the inflator, leaving the curtain airbag unable to inflate in a collision. The curtain airbag will be replaced.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
CURTAIN AIRBAG MAY NOT INFLATE IN A COLLISION
    Defect

  49. Flywheel may fail and cause a fire

Reported March 27, 2006Model years 2003–2005DVSA recall R/2006/03125,758 vehicles affected

A restrictor in the clutch pressure pipe may damage the flywheel, potentially causing it to fail and, in some circumstances, a vehicle fire. Dealers will identify the flywheel and replace it and the pipe breather where necessary.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
FLYWHEEL MAY FAIL FIRE MAY RESULT
    Defect
The two mass flywheel can become damaged because of a non-optimally designed through-flow restrictor in the clutch pressure pipe. This can lead to a total failure of the flywheel and under unfavourable circumstances to a vehicle fire.
    Remedy
Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected and establish the manufacturer of the two mass flywheel. Where necessary replace the flywheel and the breather of the clutch pressure pipe.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
SHATTER CRACKS MAY OCCUR ON A VACUUM PIPE TO BRAKE SERVO
    Defect
Shatter cracks may occur on the vacuum pipe to the brake servo near the connections. If a vacuum pipe leaks a lot more force will be necessary to operate the brake pedal.
    Remedy
The fitted vacuum pipes will be checked and replaced if necessary.
