OBD-II fault code

U3544: High Voltage System Interlock Circuit O High

What it means

HVIL loop O voltage above expected range. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The HVIL verifies that high-voltage connections and covers are securely in place. The module monitors loop O voltage; this code sets when the signal is above its expected range, a condition that can result from an open interlock loop.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Interlock loop open
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and scan all modules for related HVIL and communication codes to see whether loop O is the only circuit affected.
  2. Check loop O live voltage or status and compare it with the manufacturer's specification for the conditions when the fault occurred.
  3. With the high-voltage system safely disabled under the prescribed procedure, inspect accessible loop O connectors for incomplete seating and wiring for breaks or damage.
  4. Have a qualified technician test loop O continuity and locate any open circuit using the manufacturer's service information.
  5. If loop O continuity is good, check gateway routing and CAN termination only when other codes or measurements indicate a network issue.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loop O connector that is not fully seated.
  • Repair an open or damaged loop O wire.
  • Replace a damaged connector or terminal that interrupts continuity.
  • Address gateway routing or CAN termination only if diagnosis confirms a network fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if a high-voltage warning or reduced-power condition appears, because the open loop O may cause the system to shut down or limit operation. Do not handle high-voltage connectors.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
